Condemned ’sorcerer’ won’t die Friday, lawyer says

A Lebanese man condemned to death for sorcery by a court in Saudi Arabia won't face beheading Friday, his lawyer said Thursday.

May El Khansa told CNN she received assurances from Lebanon's justice minister that Ali Hussain Sibat will not be executed Friday. But there was no indication that Sibat's death sentence would be commuted or that he would be released, she said.

There was no immediate confirmation of the report from Lebanon's Justice Ministry, and Saudi authorities have not responded to requests for comment on Sibat's case. Sibat's wife made an emotional plea for mercy during a CNN interview Thursday, asking the kingdom's rulers to let him come back to his country and his family."

Best New Catholic Church Defense: It’s Not Pedophilia If the Boys Were Post-Pubescent – Catholic Church – Gawker

On Larry King Live last night, professional overzealous defender of the Catholic Church Bill Donohue explained to Sinead O'Connor that it's not pedophilia if the victim is 12 or 13.

See, if the kids were post-pubescent—12 or 13, according to Bill—then it's not pedophilia anymore, it is homosexuality. And that means it's not the fault of the church, it is the fault of Gays.

Obama Says Talk Radio is “Troublesome”

After shooting hoops for the cameras, Harry Smith of CBS asked Obama his thoughts on talk radio. Smith said a lot of people consider him a “socialist” and even a “Nazi” and asked the president if he is aware of this.

“Well, I think that when you listen to Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck, it’s pretty apparent, and it’s troublesome, but keep in mind that there have been periods in American history where this kind of vitriol comes out,” Obama responded. “It happens often when you’ve got an economy that is making people more anxious, and people are feeling like there is a lot of change that needs to take place. But that’s not the vast majority of Americans. I think the vast majority of Americans know that we’re trying hard, that I want what’s best for the country.”

According to CBS, Obama said “both Democrats and Republicans have a responsibility to tone down the rhetoric, but that much of it has to do with the current media environment in which extreme comments are echoed in the blogosphere.”

To avoid repeal, Obama must sell reform soon – MarketWatch

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Getting health-care reform passed was only half the battle, and if President Barack Obama wants to keep his achievement alive, he could learn from a political master: Lyndon Baines Johnson.

About a month after LBJ signed Medicare into law in July 1965, the nation's then-chief executive pulled a fast one on the American Medical Association that helped him make Medicare a success.

The wily president, who proved adept at twisting arms to push the landmark bill providing medical aid for seniors through Congress, now had to do the same with the nation's doctors in order to get the reluctant bunch on board, says Joseph Califano, Johnson's senior domestic policy aide at the time. The public was still wary of Medicare and its implications, and doctors were the chief skeptics among them.

Illinois Congressman: “I Don’t Worry About The Constitution”

A Democratic Congressman from Illinois told his constituents that he does not worry about the constitution when it comes to the health care bill signed into law last week by the president, before misquoting from the Declaration of Independence and claiming he had read the 2700 page legislation three times.

Representative Phil Hare made the comments at a meeting yesterday with his constituents in Quincy that was captured on camera.

As Hare was questioned over the constitutionality of forcing 30 million Americans to buy insurance from private companies, one member of the public asked “where in the Constitution” it says the government can do that.

“I don’t worry about the Constitution on this to be honest,” Hare replied.

Full-body scanners improve security, TSA says

Full-body imaging machines that see through clothes have significantly improved security in airports where they are deployed, and have revealed more than 60 "artfully concealed" illegal or prohibited items in the past year, the Transportation Security Administration says.

To date, no explosives have been detected by the machines, but their ability to spot even small concealed objects demonstrates their effectiveness as a security tool, officials said.

"It is absolutely a tremendous improvement of what we can detect at the checkpoints," TSA Acting Administrator Gale Rossides said this week. "It is an excellent piece of technology that will significantly improve our detection capabilities."

U.S. announces new airport security measures

U.S. officials are revising the way they screen air passengers coming to the United States, dropping measures hastily implemented after the Christmas Day bombing attempt and replacing them with a plan to give airlines and other nations "real-time, threat-based intelligence" about potential terrorists.

Under the plan, the Transportation Security Administration would give airlines and other nations information gleaned from intelligence sources about potential terrorists -- information such as partial names, partial passport numbers and travel patterns of suspects.

The plan retains existing No Fly and selectee lists, as well as the random selection of some passengers for additional screening.
