Rick Sanchez: ‘Too Cold’ in Iceland ‘To Have a Volcano There

Rick Sanchez dismissed his Iceland remark as a "joke" on Twitter on Friday morning: "yeah, it's friday reading up on...dummies who took my joke w chad about vocano [sic] literally. duhh!" Minutes later, he labeled those pointing out the comment "haters."]

On Thursday's Rick's List, CNN's Rick Sanchez again demonstrated his lack of knowledge of basic science, again related to geology. As he covered the volcanic eruption in Iceland which has disrupted thousands of airplane flights across Europe, he commented that "when you think of a volcano, you think of Hawaii and long words like that. You don't think of Iceland. You think it's too cold to have a volcano there" [audio available here; alternate video link here].

Herman van Rompuy reads Haiku after Washington nuclear summit

European Council President Herman van Rompuy on Thursday presented his first published anthology of Haiky poems. At an event at the Belgian parliament in Brussels, Van Rompuy, a former Belgian prime minister, also read out his latest Haiku, written in a combination of Flemish and French, just two days after he returned from the nuclear summit in Washington. At the summit, Van Rompuy met US President Obama for the first time.

A Haiku is a free verse poem of three lines respectively in five, seven and five syllables in which an intense experience of nature is expressed.

 

Storms threaten Haiti survivors

Three months after the Haiti earthquake there are concerns the approaching hurricane season could bring another humanitarian disaster to Haiti.

The coming storms will put many of Haiti's estimated one million homeless at risk, unless safe shelter for them can be found.

But as Al Jazeera's Sebastian Walker reports, some say those in charge are not moving fast enough.

 

Red Cross Red Crescent Provides “Elbow Grease”

Volunteers with the Haitian Red Cross and Mexican Red Cross provided "elbow grease" putting up tents for people, displaced by the Haiti earthquake on January 12, who are moving from the Petionville golf club camp to Corail Cesselesse where they will be safer during the rainy and hurricane seasons. Haitian president Rene Preval stopped by to say thank you.
