ABC Reporter Hassled By BP: Days After Thad Allen Directed Open Access, Media Clampdown Continues

While reporters in the Gulf of Mexico may want to do more to protect themselves from the risks involved in touching and swimming around in the oil, the larger battle they are fighting as they cover the oil spill crisis is one of access. BP has exerted no small effort in keeping the press at arm's length from the story. They've been barring reporters from oil drenched areas, forbidden aerial flyovers, clamped down on shooting photos of the dead wildlife, and basically worked hard to give reporters the runaround.

Saudi Arabia gives Israel clear skies to attack Iranian nuclear sites - Times Online

Saudi Arabia has conducted tests to stand down its air defences to enable Israeli jets to make a bombing raid on Iran’s nuclear facilities, The Times can reveal.

In the week that the UN Security Council imposed a new round of sanctions on Tehran, defence sources in the Gulf say that Riyadh has agreed to allow Israel to use a narrow corridor of its airspace in the north of the country to shorten the distance for a bombing run on Iran.

To ensure the Israeli bombers pass unmolested, Riyadh has carried out tests to make certain its own jets are not scrambled and missile defence systems not activated. Once the Israelis are through, the kingdom’s air defences will return to full alert.

NA208-The Spill, The Scandal and the President | Rolling Stone Politics

The White House press office organized a show of overwhelming force, with Gibbs convening Browner, Napolitano, Deputy Interior Secretary David Hayes, EPA chief Lisa Jackson and Coast Guard Rear Adm. Sally Brice-O'Hara for a single press conference on April 29th. Though clearly meant to signal engagement, the all-star crew didn't have their message straight. When Brice-O'Hara praised "the professionalism of our partner, BP," Napolitano quickly barked, "They are not our partner! They are not our partner!" For her part, Napolitano revealed that she didn't know whether the Defense Department possessed any assets that could help contain the spill, and referred vaguely to "whatever methodologies" BP was using to seal the well.

Instead of seizing the reins, the Obama administration cast itself in a supporting role, insisting that BP was responsible for cleaning up the mess. "When you say the company is responsible and the government has oversight," a reporter asked Gibbs on May 3rd, "does that mean that the government is ultimately in charge of the cleanup?" Gibbs was blunt: "No," he insisted, "the responsible party is BP." In fact, the National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan – the federal regulations that lay out the command-and-control responsibilities for cleaning up an oil spill – makes clear that an oil company like BP cannot be left in charge of such a serious disaster. The plan plainly states that the government must "direct all federal, state or private actions" to clean up a spill "where a discharge or threat of discharge poses a substantial threat to the public health or welfare of the United States."

Internet companies could be forced to track you | News.com.au

Companies who provide customers with a connection to the internet may soon have to retain subscriber's private web browsing history for law enforcement to examine when requested, a move which has been widely criticised by industry insiders.
The Attorney-General's Department yesterday confirmed to ZDNet Australia that it had been in discussions with industry on implementing a data retention regime in Australia. Such a regime would require companies providing internet access to log and retain customer's private web browsing history for a certain period of time for law enforcement to access when needed, according to Australian internet service provider sources.
Currently, companies that provide customers with a connection to the internet don't retain or log subscriber's private web browsing history unless they are given an interception warrant by law enforcement, usually approved by a judge. It is only then that companies can legally begin tapping a customer's internet connection.

Calculated Risk: Report: FBI to "arrest hundreds of people" next week for Mortgage Fraud

"The FBI is preparing to arrest hundreds of people across the US as early as next week for offences including encouraging borrowers to falsify income on mortgage applications, misleading home owners about foreclosure rescue programmes, and inflating home appraisals ... The FBI is scheduled to release its 2009 mortgage report on June 17."
The FBI usually only arrests people engaged in fraud for profit and not fraud for housing - they typically don't arrest borrowers who misrepresented their income - they arrest mortgage brokers who encouraged people to falsify their income. Although the distinction was blurred during the bubble ...

Holly Springs woman recovering after fox attack :: WRAL.com

An 87-year-old woman credits her neighbors for saving her life when a rabid fox attacked her in the back yard of her Holly Springs home last week.

Dorothy Holland said Friday that she had been planting flowers when she saw what she thought was a small dog. By the time she realized the animal was a fox, it had attacked her.

For about 5 to 10 minutes, she fought the animal, trying to kick it off her, but every time she did, it went after the other leg.

"I thought I was going to die. I thought this was my last day," Holland said. "A lot of thoughts were going through my head. I didn't know what was going to happen, because I didn't know if anybody could hear me."

YouTube - Alvin Greene

YouTube - Keith Olbermann Interviews Alvin Greene, Possible RNC Plant! Hilarious Interview.

With every interview he does, the mystery of would-be U.S. senator Alvin Greene gets deeper and stranger.

A week ago, virtually nobody had heard of the unemployed veteran with no political experience, no money and no campaign organization. Now he's generating as much buzz as those blasted vuvuzela horns at the World Cup matches. Ever since his shocking victory over former state lawmaker Vic Rawl in Tuesday's South Carolina Democratic primary, reporter after reporter has tried -- with little success -- to pry information out of Greene.

To say Greene is a man of few words is a colossal understatement. His halting, monotone manner of speaking throws off interviewers who are accustomed to candidates who won't shut up.

Wikileaks Founder Julian Assange Hunted by Pentagon Over Massive Leak - The Daily Beast

Anxious that Wikileaks may be on the verge of publishing a batch of secret State Department cables, investigators are desperately searching for founder Julian Assange.

Pentagon investigators are trying to determine the whereabouts of the Australian-born founder of the secretive website Wikileaks for fear that he may be about to publish a huge cache of classified State Department cables that, if made public, could do serious damage to national security, government officials tell The Daily Beast.

The officials acknowledge that even if they found the website founder, Julian Assange, it is not clear what they could do to block publication of the cables on Wikileaks, which is nominally based on a server in Sweden and bills itself as a champion of whistleblowers.
