New Spate of Violence Roils Mexico - WSJ.com

Mexico's war on powerful drug cartels suffered a series of setbacks on Friday, including the disappearance of a prosecutor charged with investigating this week's massacre of 72 migrants, and twin explosions that suggested cartels are trying to become proficient in car bombs.

On the same day, the U.S. State Department said it will pull out all children of its diplomatic personnel in Mexico's business capital of Monterrey. Coming after a gunbattle last week in front of an elite school that killed two private security guards, the move is a sign the U.S. believes the local government has lost control of the city to warring criminal forces.

Massive solar storm to hit Earth in 2012 with 'force of 100m bombs' - Yahoo! India News

Astronomers are predicting that a massive solar storm, much bigger in potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month, is to strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

Several US media outlets have reported that NASA was warning the massive flare this month was just a precursor to a massive solar storm building that had the potential to wipe out the entire planet's power grid.

Despite its rebuttal, NASA's been watching out for this storm since 2006 and reports from the US this week claim the storms could hit on that most Hollywood of disaster dates - 2012.

Similar storms back in 1859 and 1921 caused worldwide chaos, wiping out telegraph wires on a massive scale. The 2012 storm has the potential to be even more disruptive.

Filling Up Prisons Without Fighting Crime: Mark Kleiman on America's Criminal Justice System

UCLA Professor of Public Affairs Mark Kleiman is "angry about having too much crime and an intolerable number of people behind bars." The United States is home to five percent of the world's population and 25 percent of the world's prisoners, yet, says Kleiman, our high incarceration rate isn't making us safer.
In his book, "When Brute Force Fails," Kleiman explains that, when it comes to punishment, there is a trade-off between severity and swiftness. For too long the U.S. has erred heavily on the side of severity, but if we concentrate enforcement and provide immediate consequences for law-breakers, Kleiman says we can both reduce the crime rate and put fewer people in prison.

Tires of JetBlue plane catch fire during landing in Sacramento - San Jose Mercury News

The tires of a JetBlue airplane caught fire today during a hard landing in Sacramento that left 15 people with minor injuries and sent passengers down emergency slides to escape the aircraft.

Passenger Michelle McDuffie said people onboard felt a thud when the plane touched down about 12:50 p.m. after a flight from Long Beach, but nobody thought there was an emergency until the crew shouted for everyone to exit on the inflatable slides.

McDuffie saw the burning tires when she was on the ground.

"I thought, Oh I wish I had gotten my bag off. But I was just happy that I wasn't hurt," said McDuffie, 33, of Mission Viejo.

The plane appeared to experience trouble with its brakes, and four tires blew out during the landing, airline spokeswoman Sharon Jones said.

'Ghost train' hunter killed by train in North Carolina - CNN.com

The facts: On August 27, 1891, a passenger train jumped the tracks on a tall bridge near Statesville, North Carolina, sending seven rail cars below and about 30 people to their deaths.

The legend: On the wreck's anniversary, the sounds of screeching wheels, screaming passengers and a horrific crash might still be heard. You might also see a uniformed man with a gold watch.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Friday, on the 119th anniversary of the Bostian Bridge train tragedy and at about the same time, between 10 and 12 ghost hunters were on that approximately 300-foot long span.

They were hoping to hear the sounds of the crash, and perhaps see something.

Instead, a real Norfolk-Southern train -- three engines and one car -- turned the corner as it headed east to Statesville, about 35 miles north of Charlotte, authorities said.

The terrified "amateur ghost watchers" ran away, back toward Statesville, trying to cover the nearly 150 feet to safety, said Iredell County Sheriff's Office Capt. Darren Campbell.

All but two made it.

Christopher Kaiser, 29, of Charlotte, was struck and killed, said Campbell.

British Airways Flight Bound For Hong Kong Scares Passengers After Emergency Crash Message Plays By Mistake - ABC News

British Airways apologized today after a crew member reportedly played an emergency message by mistake, informing roughly 275 passengers aboard a Hong Kong-bound flight that they were about to make an emergency water landing .

Passenger Michelle Lord told ABC News that it was an automated announcement with a female voice telling them their 'fate.'

"Everyone was panicking," Lord said. "There [were] people who were crying and shaking. Obviously it's not the sort of thing that you hear every day so nobody knows how to react. But there was definitely a sense of panic."
