Obama wants Diplomats to survive because they're not Soldiers - Press Conference, Iraq, Maliki

President Obama plans to maintain a significant number of employees in the U.S. embassy in Baghdad in order to protect U.S. diplomats who could be targeted after the U.S. military departs from Iraq.
The President elaborated further on this issue during a joint press conference with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki on Monday:
"With respect to the embassy, the actual size of our embassy with respect to diplomats..., there are still some special security needs inside of Iraq that make the overall number larger...
"Look, we're only a few years removed from an active war inside of Iraq. I think it's fair to say that there are still some groups, although they are greatly weakened, that might be tempted to target U.S. diplomats, or civilians... And as President of the United States, I want to make sure that anybody who is out in Iraq trying to help the Iraqi people is protected.
"Now, as this transition proceeds, it may turn out that the security needs for our diplomats and for our civilians gradually reduces itself... But I think the Iraqi people can understand that, as President of the United States, if I'm putting civilians in the field in order to help the Iraqi people build their economy and improve their productivity, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY COME HOME [alive]- BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT SOLDIERS. So that makes the numbers larger than they otherwise would be..."

Remarks With U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague After Their Meeting 19 mins in

SECRETARY CLINTON: Well, Steven, first, with respect to actions regarding Iran, we are very clearly making known our concerns. We submitted a formal request for the return of our lost equipment, as we would in any situation to any government around the world. Given Iran's behavior to date, we do not expect them to comply, but we are dealing with all of these provocations and concerning actions taken by Iran in close concert with our closest allies and partners, starting with the UK. We obviously believe strongly in a diplomatic approach. We want to see the Iranians engage, and as you know, we have attempted to bring about that engagement over the course of the last three-plus years. It has not proven effective, but we're not giving up on it.

POS in canadian parliment

  • Environment Minister Peter Kent attracted the latest icy nor'wester during Wednesday's question period when he chided NDP critic Megan Leslie for being ill-informed about last week's climate-change conference because she hadn't attended. In fact, the government blocked the opposition from attending the UN conference in Durban, South Africa, as part of the Canadian delegation.
  • Kent's putdown prompted a clearly audible outburst by Liberal MP Justin Trudeau: ``You piece of shit!'' he yelled across the aisle. (expletive is audible at 1 minute and 8 second mark)
