Transportation Head Defends $129 Billion Budget.

Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood presented his agency's $129 billion budget request for fiscal year 2012 today at a Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee hearing.

The focus of the hearing was on a request for $53 billion infrastructure investment in rails, roads and runways under the president’s economic and job creation agenda. The plan is similar to the projects funded by the stimulus bill that created 15,000 projects and 65,000 jobs.

The Obama administration has proposed a six-year plan that will provide rail access to new communities, as well as improve the reliability, speed and frequency of existing lines and build new corridors where trains traveling at speeds of up to 250 mph. Additionally, the department is seeking $3.1 billion in competitive grants to airports.

Why Build High-Speed Rail in the Northeast? from Regional Plan Association on Vimeo.

 Regional Plan Association.

High-speed rail in the Northeast Corridor is a critical component to providing the capacity needed to support projected growth in the megaregion. The Corridor's $3 trillion economy, representing 20% of the nation's total on just 2% of its land mass, is the direct result of our nation's historic investments in world-class infrastructure. Its 50 million residents live at densities over 12 times the national average and over 750,000 commuter and intercity passengers depend on the Corridor every day. As its population and economy grow, travel on the Corridor will continue to increase and investments in key infrastructure must keep pace in order to avoid gridlock. However, as our vital transportation arteries clog up, current budgets do not project similar investments to meet future demand.
The Northeast Corridor must invest in high-speed rail, as a pillar of our regional transportation and land use planning strategy, in order to support and maintain the freedom and mobility that economic health and competitiveness of the Northeast Megaregion is founded on.

Fox News Hates Trains?

140+ MORE examples of Fox News Bias at http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list...
Fox News' one-sided attacks on a California high speed rail project last week was a sure sign of the budget battle beginning between President Barack Obama and the Republicans controlling the US House of Representatives with Fox News playing its partisan role trying to lower public support for this infrastructure investment proposed by President Obama but disfavored by Republicans, as I show in this video.
The clips of Fox News anchor Jon Scott and Fox News reporter William La Jeunesse trashing the proposed high speed train from Madera to Corcoran come from a segment of the program "Happening Now" broadcast February 14, 2011, which I have not found online, but which is similar to a video story posted online at http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/...

Governor Rejects Federal High Speed Rail Money | TheLedger.com

In a decision that could have far-reaching political and economic consequences, Gov. Rick Scott on Wednesday abruptly terminated the $2.4 billion high-speed train that would link Tampa with Orlando, vowing to send the money back to the federal government.

The decision, announced at a hastily called news conference, further solidified Scott's image as an aggressive cost-cutter fulfilling a vow to rein in government spending. It also reinforced his political alliance with the anti-tax tea party movement, which has strongly opposed high-speed rail projects pushed by President Barack Obama.

But critics, including both Republicans and Democrats, said the new governor was prematurely turning his back on an innovative mass-transit project that could produce an estimated 24,000 jobs and could help reshape the state's economy.
